Which Higher Ed Marketer Are You, Based on Your Zodiac Sign?

Which Higher Ed Marketer Are You, Based on Your Zodiac Sign? | Devin Purgason
Higher Ed Marketing / August 11, 2026 / 9 min read

Somebody on your team has said "that's such a Scorpio thing to do" at least once this year, usually right after a campaign underperformed and everyone wanted to know why. Astrology has no scientific backing. The APA will back me up on that, and it doesn't change a thing. Marketing offices use the zodiac as personality shorthand anyway, so here are twelve actual jobs on a higher ed marketing team instead of the vague traits printed on a coffee mug. Find your sign. Tag the colleague who's obviously a Virgo.

Western astrology sorts the twelve signs into four elements and three modes. Fire signs activate. Earth signs build. Air signs communicate. Water signs notice what the dashboard can't show. Cross that with cardinal signs that start things and fixed signs that keep them going, plus the mutable signs quietly adapting whatever's left, and you get a rough map of an entire marketing team: the person who launched the campaign before the emergency meeting ended, and the person still asking why it actually failed three weeks later.

None of this belongs in a hiring rubric or a performance review. It belongs here.

Questions this piece answers

Frequently asked questions

Is there any science behind zodiac signs and personality?

No. The APA Dictionary of Psychology classifies astrology as a pseudoscience: the belief that planetary positions shape personal characteristics, unsupported by any scientific evidence. Treat this piece as a fun organizing device, not a hiring tool.

What zodiac sign makes the best higher ed marketer?

None of them, on their own. Aries starts things and Virgo makes sure they hold up. Somebody like Pisces usually has to make sure the campaign still means something once it's live. One sign covers maybe a third of the job.

Which zodiac sign is best suited to run social media?

In this framework, Gemini. The sign's traditional association with quick communication and constant channel switching lines up with what a social role actually requires day to day.

Which zodiac sign fits CRM and marketing operations work best?

In this framework, Virgo. The traits assigned to the sign, precision and a low tolerance for sloppy data, match the daily reality of segmentation and automation work.

What's the best zodiac sign for enrollment marketing?

Aries, in this framework. The sign's association with quick action and comfort launching before every detail is settled maps onto the always-on pace of enrollment campaigns.

Can I use this to make actual hiring or team decisions?

No. Treat this the way you'd treat any office icebreaker: fun to argue about, useless as an actual method for evaluating someone's work.

None of this will show up on a KPI dashboard. It might explain a few things about why your dashboard looks the way it does. Screenshot your card and tag the teammate who's obviously a Scorpio. See if the rest of your team agrees. If you want to guess who's who on the marketing team at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, I'm not confirming anything. Ask me next time you see me at a conference.
